WHY IS MEMBERSHIP IN TIAA SO IMPORTANT?

Dues paying members influence the future direction of TIAA through their ability to vote on key issues. This is unique for an alumni association to empower its members to have such a voice in how their organization serves them. When you join TIAA, you are supporting an organization dedicated to strengthening your professional connections, supporting your success and helping you grow throughout your career.   Membership dues also support the many regional and global activities sponsored by TIAA.

Each dues paying member of TIAA effectively owns a portion of TIAA. Any proposed changes to TIAA’s operating guidelines, such as by-laws and other major decisions affecting the organization, require the voting approval of TIAA dues paying members.

HOW IS TIAA DIFFERENT FROM THE THUNDERBIRD ALUMNI OFFICE?

TIAA is the only alumni association for graduates specifically of Thunderbird Global School of Management. TIAA is a membership-based organization focused on the global and professional development of Thunderbird alumni. Alumni are required to join in order to participate. TIAA was created with the objective of serving the needs of current Thunderbird students and our global alumni community. Many services are available, including but not limited to: frequent communications to members, numerous professional development and networking programs/events in cities around the world, advocacy on behalf of members, and membership privileges to paid members. While the Thunderbird Alumni Office (TAO) provides administrative support to the school and manages the local alumni chapters, TIAA is the only member-based organization for Thunderbird alumni and friends.

HOW IS TIAA DIFFERENT FROM THE THUNDERBIRD EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL (TELC)?

TIAA is a membership-based network and association dedicated to enriching each member’s growth and leadership in global business. All degree-holding graduates from Thunderbird may apply for membership to TIAA. In contrast, the TELC is an advisory group, comprised of both alumni and non-alumni, who are selected by the CEO & Director General of Thunderbird to provide counsel to the administration on matters central to the School’s strategic mission.

HOW ARE THE TIAA BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHOSEN?

The TIAA Board of Directors is an elected Board and serves as the overarching advisory group to TIAA. Candidates for the Board may be nominated from any avenue or may self-nominate. Candidates are vetted and evaluated by the current Board, then nominated to the members and elected by dues paying members of TIAA. Each Board member may serve up to two consecutive three-year terms. There are currently seven directors; TIAA by-laws specify a maximum of nine Board Directors.
