Member Spotlight: Jaro Horvath '06

GET OUTSIDE. HAVE FUN. DO GOOD.

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle.”

  • Steve Jobs

After Jaro Horvath’s, ‘06, dream to play basketball in the NBA fizzled, education was plan B. With that, another dream was born – to get a big job on Wall Street, or least somewhere “fancy downtown.” He followed the path with a business undergrad degree, a sales boot camp job out of college, corporate banking for five years in the U.S. and EU, and then a MIM degree at Thunderbird.

Thunderbird changed Jaro’s life. No more Wall Street. Embracing what the school has stood for since inception, Jaro wanted to have an opportunity to support the Thunderbird mission and help organizations around the world “…develop leaders who create sustainable prosperity worldwide.” Jaro worked with companies and non-profits around the globe, and even had the honor to support the U.S. Advisory Forces Operations Iraqi Freedom. After 10 years in the executive education and consulting sectors (seven years at Thunderbird and three on his own), the words of Steve Jobs which open this profile hit home. Even though Jaro enjoyed and became good at what he did… he knew he did not LOVE it.

Thanks Steve Jobs, but what now? He was invested. Yet he was even more determined to create a positive impact in the world in way that not only made him successful, but also fulfilled him.

Connecting business, adventure, and doing good, Jaro now creates a positive impact in the world one adventure challenge at a time. He launched Adventure for Charity (AFC) in 2016 and has issued a challenge to TIAA members:

“I challenge my fellow T-birds to GET OUTSIDE, HAVE FUN, DO GOOD and I would love to see which country or TIAA region does the coolest adventure challenge and raises the most money to support our alma mater and us, the alumni. Do it on your own as only T-birds do, or do it with us. If you do it with us at AFC, I raise the stakes … 100% of Adventure for Charity’s proceeds for challenge(s) in 2018 will be donated to TIAA. Thunderbird has changed my life and I am ready to give back to support our alma mater and TIAA programming for Thunderbird alumni.”
